Cape Canaveral - a model for getting beach accessibility done!

Cape Canaveral, located midway between Jacksonville and Miami along Florida’s Space Coast, is not only the hub of our nation's space program but it also is a shining example of how an active engagement from local groups and investment from local government can result is a beautiful example of how any beach can be transformed into a welcoming, accessible vacation oasis.

The local fire department Canaveral Fire Rescue, who are locally revered for constantly going above and beyond for their community, received a beach wheelchair from the No Bad Days Foundation for use at the beach access points with beach mats (see below for locations)! The donated chair will be available on a first come basis and the Fire Department will deliver and pick up the beach wheelchair at one of the four locations with installed beach mats upon request. Just call 321/783-4424 between 8:00 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday to make the request.

Cape Canaveral has both beach mats AND beach wheelchairs but does not yet have Accessible Docks/Marinex Swimming Rigs which allow handicapped users to safely enter the open water.

Beach Mats are installed on the following beach crossovers in Cape Canaveral:

  • Buchanan Avenue
  • Monroe Avenue
  • Polk Avenue
  • Ridgewood Avenue Beach Crossover -- just north of Canaveral Sands Condo and Cherie Down Park

Be sure not to miss Canaveral National Seashore, which has 24 miles of undeveloped beach, 1,045 plant species and 310 bird species and also try to check out the Brevard Zoo and the Kennedy Space Center.
