Malmøya is a small island just outside of downtown Oslo, the capital of Norway. The island is mostly known for its large quantities of fossils from the Cambro-Silurian period, lush forest, sandy beaches (on the west side) and its rare flowers. Norway takes accessibility extremely seriously and as a result tries to make sure everyone can safely enjoy the water through significant investments in available accessibility technology.
There has been a Swimming Rig or "accessible dock" installed by Marinex there for many years now. The Oslo municipality also installed a bulkhead to protect the environment and swimming space from the sometimes rough sea. It has become a fantastic facility that is now open to the public and is a must visit for everyone who enjoys the water - there is nothing like it in the world outside of Norway, although plans are underway to bring the first rigs to North America in 2021.
The Swimming Rig is essentially a floating dock that has a railed ramp that leads into a fortified swimming area which allows swimming within and an exit point in the rear of the dock so people can venture out if they like. The caged swimming area also provide a sunning deck on either side of the rig for lounging or diving off.
For those who enjoy camping should not miss the accessible camping site!
